best free android games

Alto’s Odyssey

worth: free to play

Alto’s Odyssey is a natural choice for a free Android game. It has simple mechanics, gorgeous graphics and a relaxing style. Players ski down a hill while avoiding obstacles and making massive jumps. There are also items to collect that can be traded in for various customization options. The game relies heavily on its wallpaper-worthy graphics. They are simple yet effective and the deep, gradient colors add a nice atmosphere to the game.

It’s completely free to download and play with some limited ads. There are in-app purchases, but they’re all for customizable content so it’s completely optional and doesn’t affect gameplay. It is kid friendly and fun. Noodlecake Studio also does Alto’s Adventure, its predecessor. Here’s a list of the best endless runners if you want other options. Also, give Screenshot Mode a try for some excellent desktop background ideas.

Apex Legends Mobile

worth: free to play

Apex Legends Mobile launched in 2022 and became an immediate success. It’s a 60-player battle royale shooter (20 teams of three players) with a few other game modes to keep things fresh. Players choose from a cast of Legends, each with their own playing style and abilities. You can unlock more as you play the game. It has some of the best controls we’ve seen in a mobile shooter and even some single player stuff you can do if you don’t feel like playing against others. Like most battle royale games, the depth of content is a bit thin. However, it seems that people really enjoy shooting it in large numbers.

Asphalt 9: Legends

worth: free to play

The Asphalt franchise features some of the most popular mobile racing games. Asphalt 8: Airborne and Asphalt Extreme were big in the series. However, Asphalt 9: Legends came out in July 2018. This is now the most recent game in the series. It includes 50 cars, a slew of challenges, and a slew of content to play. This includes online multiplayer, single-player stuff, and more.

It uses an auto-go mechanism so you can’t control your acceleration. To be honest, it’s not the best implementation, but you get used to it. The graphics are good and have social elements too. This is a freemium game. Thus, the online competitive aspect may be a bit skewed. However, the single-player stuff is classically good arcade racing. You can also skip in-app purchases with the extra grinding. It is tedious but completely doable. There are also some other great racing games on mobile.

brawl stars

worth: free to play

Brawl Stars is the latest hit game from Supercell. It is a brawler with online multiplayer elements as well as some MOBA elements. Players enter the game with some teammates, brawl with opponents and try to win. There are a few game modes, including a straightforward brawl mode, a mode where you collect crystals, a robbery mode where you steal an opponent’s treasure, and a reward mode where you defeat specific opponents on a team.

It feels like a Supercell game and that’s mostly a good thing. Supercell also manufactures Clash Royale, Clash of Clans and Boom Beach. If you like Auto Battlers (Clash Royale) or Kingdom Builder strategy games (Clash of Clans and Boom Beach) they can all easily go on a list like this. If you want more you can find more beat ups here.

Call of Duty: Mobile

worth: free to play

Call of Duty: Mobile is one of the newer games on this list. We usually wait a bit to see how a game plays out, but it’s so popular and so good that we had to add it to the original right away. The game involves the classic online FPS PvP like any Call of Duty. However, it also includes a 100-player battle royale mode similar to PUBG Mobile and Fortnite. This places it in the rare category of a good regular FPS game like Critical Ops as well as a good battle royale like PUBG Mobile.

The game has in-app purchases, but they are purely for cosmetic gear and a good amount of it is available as in-game rewards. The gameplay is good and people really like it. It’s relatively new so there are some bugs, but they should be fixed over time. There are some other great FPS games out there if that doesn’t do it for you.

EA Sports Games

worth: free to play

EA has put the market on sports games. They are the only developer with annual launches for most games, including their Madden NFL Overdrive game, FIFA Soccer, NBA Live Mobile, EA Sports UFC, and more. All of these games have very similar elements. You can play the real game and all these games have a sim mechanic. The graphics are generally quite good and the controls are generally good. However, EA Sports games have heavy free-to-play elements. This is a constant frustration for many players and makes it difficult to recommend EAs in general.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius

worth: free to play

Final Fantasy Brave Xvius is probably the best Final Fantasy-themed freemium game out there. It includes many elements of the original games, including real city and dungeon exploration, hidden treasures, secret dungeons, and lots of lore. The gameplay is easy to learn but you will need to think critically to defeat the bosses and tough opponents. You’re often rewarded for logging in daily and additional missions, quests, and activities help keep the game fresh.

jenshin effect

worth: free to play

Genshin Impact was a surprise release which is actually pretty cool. It’s a mix of an action RPG with a gacha element. It has most of the usual gacha elements, including a story to play with and lots of teammates to summon. However, it is far less restrictive and comes with a completely open world and some satisfying combat mechanics. The graphics and gameplay are both surprisingly good. Plus, you can play with people on PS4, iOS, and PC. It’s a sneaky good game, despite the free-to-play price tag and gacha label.

League of Legends: Wild Rift

worth: free to play

League of Legends: Wild Rift was launched in 2021 and is already one of the best mobile MOBA. It features 5v5 gameplay with a fairly balanced champion. Matches take an average of 15-20 minutes which is a bit long for mobile gaming. However, everything else about it is great. We especially like that you can’t buy winnings in this game. Everyone has the same champion options.

The only downside is matchmaking. Casual playlists sometimes pit lower level players against more experienced players for some one-sided games. This is a trend in today’s gaming anyway, and there isn’t much that can be done. Here’s a list of more cool MOBAs if you want to check them out.

legends of runeterra

worth: free to play

Legends of Runterra is the newest game on the list. This is a card dueling game similar to Hearthstone (another excellent free-to-play game). Players collect cards, build decks, and duel each other until one wins. You choose a champion, build the deck around it, and it helps define your strategy. It’s honestly like the Commander game type in Magic: The Gathering.

Nintendo Games

worth: free to play (usually)

Nintendo has a handy recommendation for free Android games. They have a variety of different styles of games and most of them rest on the nostalgia aspect. Some Nintendo titles include Dragalia Lost, Fire Emblem: Heroes, Mario Kart Tour and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. There’s also a Dr. Mario World game if you like puzzles. Each game is neatly executed with smooth gameplay and colorful graphics. Some, like Mario Kart Tour, are a little rough around the edges with its free-to-play elements, but otherwise, Nintendo does a decent job of delivering decent experiences.

We definitely recommend Fire Emblem Heroes to RPG fans especially those looking to strategize. Fun fact, Mario Kart Tour has the second biggest mobile launch ever after Call of Duty: Mobile

pocket city

worth: Free / $2.99

Pocket City is as close to SimCity as you can get on Android. The game starts as many other city builders. You build roads, residential areas, commercial areas and important buildings. There are disasters to deal with and surprisingly deep economic and crime mechanics to track. The free version of the game does not have many features like the premium version and also contains ads.

However, most of the extra features are just that, extras, and you can play the core game for free without paying for it. This is easily one of the best simulators on Android right now, even though it was a rough patch when it debuted.

pokemon go

worth: free to play

Pokémon Go was the biggest mobile game of 2016. Even though its popularity may have waned a bit, the game is still a pretty solid free option. It even saw a resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Players can explore the real world around them while catching Pokemon, visiting gyms, and finding Pokestops. New additions include legendary Pokémon, raid battles, trainer battles (with a few caveats), and more. You can also trade Pokémon in the game now.

Many people remember that the game continues to evolve beyond that. When it finally ends its run, it will go down as one of the greatest and most iconic mobile games of all time. It stands alone in the list of best augmented reality games.

roblox

worth: free to play

Roblox is one of the most popular games in the world right now. It’s a sandbox game with metric tons of content to play. The game is ancient by mobile gaming standards, but an increasing amount of things keep it relevant today. Players can play stuff that other players make or stuff themselves.

The mobile app has full cross-platform support with other versions of the game and includes a chat function. Downloadable content is sometimes NSFW, so be sure to supervise your kids if you let them play. There are also some other great sandbox games here.

smash hit

worth: Free / $1.99

Smash Hit is one of the best endless runners ever. It uses a unique first-person perspective and you have to throw metal balls at glass panels to avoid damage. Your hit point doubles your ammo count, so there’s a subtle management aspect to the game being hit as low as possible to throw as many balls as possible. The free version of the game contains the full game from start to finish. The premium version adds savings and player stats.

general question

Tencent’s PUBG Mobile is the most popular game in the Google Play store, having been downloaded over a billion times.

Microsoft updated Minecraft on Android to offer the same features as the PC and Xbox versions of the game. You can also crossplay with your friends on other platforms. The download link is in the list above.
