Xiaomi 12S Ultra unboxing and first impressions

Xiaomi last year introduced the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the company’s latest flagship camera-focused phone, as the successor to last year’s 11 Ultra in China. It packs a 50MP Sony IMX989 1″ sensor and has advanced optics co-engineered with Leica and also uses the Leica imaging profile. We have to check the phone. Here we have our first impressions.

The phone flaunts a 6.73-inch Quad HD+ AMOLED display with 1-120Hz variable refresh rate and 480Hz touch sampling rate. Screen in bright, thanks to 1500 nits peak brightness. The screen also has HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Inside the small punch-hole is a 32MP camera. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

It has an in-display fingerprint sensor. There is a small bezel at the bottom of the display.

The power button and volume rocker are present on the right side. At the bottom, there are dual SIM slots, microphone, USB Type-C port and speaker grille. Secondary speakers, IR blaster and secondary microphone are present at the top. The phone has a metal frame, so you can see the antenna line.

It has Leica Summicron optics, Dolby Vision HDR video recording and 8K video recording. There’s HyperOIS for ultra-stable performance. It has an 8P aspheric lens to address common photography issues like flare, ghosting and chromatic aberration. The camera module also includes anti-glare lens coating with spin coating technology, lens edge ink coating, cyclic olefin copolymer material and infrared light filter.

Images from the main camera with 1″ sensor are spectacular. According to Xiaomi, after pixel binning, the output is 3.2μm, thus reducing noise, expanding dynamic range, enhancing the light captured, and achieving overall better imagery in low light conditions. You can choose from Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant modes. There are some custom Leica filters and portrait mode

In addition to the 48MP ultra-wide camera you can shoot macro images and videos, there’s also a 48MP periscope telephoto camera that supports 5X optical zoom and up to 120X digital zoom. Zooming up to 20X is good, but after that it loses detail. Check out some camera samples.

The back of the phone has eco-friendly silicone leather that provides a good grip. The phone packs a 4,860mAh single-cell silicon-oxygen anode battery. It supports 67W wired fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging and 10W reverse wireless charging.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is currently only available in China, and the company has not yet revealed any details about a global or India roll out.
